TURKEY TO CENTRALIZE MARKETING CONSENTS IN A NEW ELECTRONIC SYSTEM RESEMBLING DO-NOT-DISTURB REGISTRIES:
Pursuant to the Regulation Amending the Regulation on Commercial Communication and Commercial Electronic Messages (“Regulation”) that was published in the Official Gazette dated 4 January 2020 and numbered 30998, all natural and legal entities that deliver electronic commercial messages are obliged to register with the Centralized Commercial Message Management System (“IYS”).

DIGITAL SERVICE TAX ENTERS INTO FORCE ON 1 MARCH 2020:
The Law no. 7194 on Digital Service Tax and Amendment of Certain Laws and the Decree Law numbered 375 (“Law no. 7194”) is published in the Official Gazette dated 7 December 2019 and numbered 30971. The Law no. 7194 stipulates a “digital service tax,” which will enter into force as of 1 March 2020.

THE DATA PROTECTION BOARD EXTENDS DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION WITH DATA CONTROLLERS’ REGISTRY AGAIN:
The Data Protection Board (Board) has recently resolved to extend the deadline for registration with the Data Controllers’ Registry Information System (“VERBIS”). The decision no. 2019/387 on the extension was announced on the board’s website on 27 December 2019.

FINAL REMINDER FOR REGISTRATION OBLIGATIONS: DATA CONTROLLERS HAVE 20 DAYS TO REGISTER:
One of the main obligations of the data controllers under the Turkish Personal Data Protection Law is to register with a publicly available Data Controllers’ Registry through an online information system called “VERBIS”. For certain data controllers, this obligation is due by 31 December 2019.
