THE DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION WITH DATA CONTROLLERS’ REGISTRY HAS BEEN EXTENDED

The Data Protection Board has very recently resolved to extend the deadline for registration with the Data Controllers’ Registry Information System (“VERBIS”). The decision no. 2019/265 and dated 3 September 2019 on the extension was announced on the board’s website on 5 September 2019.

The Data Protection Board had previously determined the timeline for data controllers’ obligation to register with VERBIS with its decision numbered 2018/88. Accordingly, 30 September 2019 was the final deadline for registration in terms of the following:

  • The real person and legal entity data controllers who employ more than 50 employees annually or achieved a total yearly balance of 25 million Turkish Liras (c. EUR 4,000,000) and
  • The real person or legal entity data controllers residing abroad.

According to the latest board decision, the deadline for registration with VERBIS for the abovementioned data controllers has been extended to 31 December 2019.

The obligation to register with the registry is one of the fundamental obligations of the data controllers under the Personal Data Protection Law, and non-compliance with this obligation may lead to administrative fines up to TRY 1,000,000.
